I've noticed tufts of wool pulled up on the backs of my sheep. It's not wool chewing, another bad habit that can ruin the fleece, but just little bits pulled up. I finally figured out that the sheep are picking little bits of delicious alfafa leaves from each other's wool. The alfafa bales brought to me by Libby out in the Rochester area will be gone soon. I'm lucky I had some rich hay to give the ewes in the last stages of gestation.
